From Across the Hall

From Across the Hall is a guest post that Sweet Talk will be featuring containing life and style advice from Emily's roommate Rachelle. To contact Rachelle, click here.

As Emily’s roommate, I have benefitted* (and suffered**) from her baking endeavors.  In exchange, I have provided her with my opinions, mostly unsolicited.  Accordingly, I intend to provide insight into my tastes and preferences (baking and otherwise) to her blog.  Whether anyone besides Emily will care, remains to be seen.

I love Etsy.***  “Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade” demands the website that seeks to connect artisans with buyers.  In addition to peddling crafts and vintage goods, Etsy is a great source for personalized gifts.  Recently, I commissioned cookies in the shape of a football helmet for my brother’s birthday and a stamp customized for my friend, a recent graduate of chiropractic school.  However, weeding through the pages of bizarre crafts and junk can be daunting.  (See for details.)  As we anxiously await the opening of Sweet Talk’s Esty shop, I have compiled strategies for locating other stellar shops and fantastic finds.

1.  Etsy’s homepage features a selection of regularly updated handpicked items.

2. Posts on the Storque, Etsy’s blog, detail sellers, trends, and unique goods.

3. Etsy’s Gift Guides are a great source for unique gifts.

4.  Pursue the favorites of other Etsy users.

Here are some of mine-
+ High Street Market: Vintage Home Goods
+ Tug Boat Print Shop: Original Woodcut Prints
+ Little White Dresser: Handmade Belts
+ Shlomit Ofir: Unique Jewelry

5. Finally, if you can’t find what you are looking for, place a request on Etsy’s Alchemy forum.

(My most recent Etsy purchase, Hi-5 mittens)

* Black & White Cookies, Peppermint Brownies (Recipes soon to come on Sweet Talk)
** Homemade Thin Mints, First Attempt at Macarons
*** Sweet Talk will soon have an Etsy store selling some of the treats you see on the blog. Stay tuned for more details.
